Hi All.....

For the first time in 10 years, I had to have a computer reformatted. And
reinstalling all of the programs and updating them has been a royal PITA!!

However....I see that in OE, the attachments will not open. They did fine
OK after the reinstall, I think.....but I assume it is some sort of
association that I need to fix/change/do/whatever.

Also, I thought the new Clickfree backup would reinstall all of my *.dbx
files into OE with no problem, but such is not the case. They are all in
the folder and I have the main ones connected and a couple of subfolders,
but not entirely sure how to reconnect the others. OTOH, it is not a big
deal.

PA.....OE wasn't corrupt as we thought. Once I got rid of a lot of news
groups under Motzarella when changing it to Eternal September, the durned
thing started compacting again.....including the Folders File. Have no
idea why, but not going to ask, grin.

So if you can tell me why I can't click on the paperclip to open photos,
etc., I will be happy. There is something glitchy with the XP install and
I will hit that group with a few questions. Minor I suppose, but I don't
like glitches.

Cheers.....Heather/Figgs

Installed IE8 again (ptui).....*.doc attachment is opening at the moment,
but not jpegs. And they opened a few days ago. Baffled.

Not sure what changed, but there is no Cookie Folder or Temp. Internet
Folder showing in Windows Explorer. Tech put his name at the top of the
tree and I can't change it......dunno if that is causing a problem, other
than I go in a back way and remove the temp junk and spyware cookies. Also
have CCleaner on here and that takes care of them.

Never was checked. Know that one. OH.....Address Book imported just fine
cuz I had that in My Documents as a just in case.

Yes it did. I have a new one and an old one. Ditto for a lot of the
subfolder ones. Both my computer guy and PA had mentioned that. I suppose
I could pick out the old ones and put them on a jump drive. Clickfree backs
up all photos, data and mp3's, but it wiped out my folders of driver updates
and unopened programs......let me rephrase that. I hadn't copied those
folders to a CD and Clickfree didn't back them up.

How to restore individual dbx files:

I will give that a look and if it is Tom, Steve or Majik at work.....it
might just do the trick. I wondered if I had to have the exact same name in
my new OE for the subfolders (i.e. genealogy) as before. Odd that some
worked OK.....one important one being where I kept my program
passwords.....others it can't seem to pull up, so I am thinking I should
have had all the subfolders named before transferring over the old lot.

Ahhh....looking at Majik's instructions and will give those a try. Need to

JPEG attachments are being a problem for some IE8 users. This poster went
through Microsoft tier 1, tier 2 and finally tier 3 tech support and was
finally advised to remove E8 until a patch was released.

Archived thread on opening attachments after installing IE8:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...0verizo n.net

What can you do? Try the following. If it does not resolve your problem,
then revert back to IE7 for the time being.

Remove IE8 and restart twice.

How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

Download IE8 to your Desktop. Do not use Windows or Microsoft Updates.

Internet Explorer 8 download:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/int...r/default.aspx

Restart your computer. With no other programs running, disable your
anti-virus program and any spyware or spam programs you may have. If you are
running a third party firewall, disable it and enable the Windows firewall.

Now install IE8 from the Desktop. When you're done, restart your computer
twice and then make sure your disabled programs are running again.

Did you happen to install IE8 again? Did you disable all real-time
protections afforded by your (1) anti-virus application, (2) any
anti-spyware applications, (3) disable any third-party firewall (and then
enable the Windows Firewall) prior to installing IE8?

Assuming either the CDs that same with the computer or the hidden Recover

reinstalled (which would NOT have been valid)?

Also, I thought the new Clickfree backup would reinstall all of my *.dbx

I wouldn't depend on any such program to backup *and* "reinstall" OE data.
There's no way that the {GUID} associated with your new/current identity
(after the reinstall) is identical to the {GUID} associated with your
pre-reinstall identity. (And I'd hope that your Inbox, Sent Items, and
Deleted Items folders were empty and that you'd compacted all OE folders
prior to backing up the old data.)

If you have "orphaned" DBX files, you may be able to import them. See...

Importing a single DBX file

Thanks Bruce......I knew you guys would fix this!! I don't use IE much as I
am a diehard Firefox person, so I am just going to remove IE8 and see if
that does the trick. I think I used Windows Update to get it.....having
refused it a week before. Shoulda stuck to that, but the tech guy thought
it would solve some other dumb problem.

I also am going to uninstall a program or two (printer and photo one) and
then work on the email problem. The hardest part of a reformat?? Getting
it to work smoothly like before.....warts and all, lol.

Btw....when the computer was a mess and crashing on me, the jpegs worked
OK....go figure!!

Hi PA......yes, I made the grave error of installing IE8 again and no I
didn't disable anything!! It was a Windows Update install.

The CD was the same 5 year old one that Willy originally installed XP on
here with, so had to update a lot of stuff. He hadn't quite gotten all the
MS updates, but did put SP3 on.

As for using Norton or McAfee.......bite your tongue!! You know I know
better, grin. Hate them both due to being a WinME user. I have Avast on
here.

I do believe I compacted them but probably some of the ones on the Clickfree
gadget might not have been done. Compact All Folders started working about
a week before the reformat. And YES.....that was the problem before.

So I will remove this *dastardly* IE8 program and see how it goes. Thanks
for the input and you know who sends her best.....(G)

pre-reinstall identity. (And I'd hope that your Inbox, Sent Items, and
Deleted Items folders were empty and that you'd compacted all OE folders
prior to backing up the old data.)

If you have "orphaned" DBX files, you may be able to import them. See...

Importing a single DBX file

And
reinstalling all of the programs and updating them has been a royal
PITA!!

However....I see that in OE, the attachments will not open. They did

Have no
idea
why, but not going to ask, grin.

So if you can tell me why I can't click on the paperclip to open photos,
etc., I will be happy. There is something glitchy with the XP install
and I
will hit that group with a few questions. Minor I suppose, but I don't
like
glitches.

Thanks Bruce......I knew you guys would fix this!! I don't use IE much
as I am a diehard Firefox person, so I am just going to remove IE8 and
see if that does the trick. I think I used Windows Update to get
it.....having refused it a week before. Shoulda stuck to that, but the
tech guy thought it would solve some other dumb problem.

I also am going to uninstall a program or two (printer and photo one) and
then work on the email problem. The hardest part of a reformat??
Getting it to work smoothly like before.....warts and all, lol.

Btw....when the computer was a mess and crashing on me, the jpegs worked
OK....go figure!!

Cheers....Heather

JPEG attachments are being a problem for some IE8 users. This poster
went through Microsoft tier 1, tier 2 and finally tier 3 tech support
and was finally advised to remove E8 until a patch was released.

Archived thread on opening attachments after installing IE8:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...0verizo n.net

What can you do? Try the following. If it does not resolve your problem,
then revert back to IE7 for the time being.

Remove IE8 and restart twice.

How do I uninstall or remove Internet Explorer 8?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957700

Download IE8 to your Desktop. Do not use Windows or Microsoft Updates.

Internet Explorer 8 download:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/int...r/default.aspx

Restart your computer. With no other programs running, disable your
anti-virus program and any spyware or spam programs you may have. If you
are running a third party firewall, disable it and enable the Windows
firewall.

Now install IE8 from the Desktop. When you're done, restart your
computer twice and then make sure your disabled programs are running
again.
