use of special characters in emails
I can use special accented characters when writing emails=20
for Italian, French, Spanish, etc. just by using the left- alt key and 3 or 4 digits on the number pad (ex. alt130 =3D=20 =E9). However I simply cannot get the Maltese characters=20 (c,g and z with a dot above them, and h with a slash=20 through it) to work. In the character map for Times New=20 Roman - the only font I use in emails - the "C" with a=20 dot is listed as U+010A and the "c" is listed as U+010B. =20 Can someone please explain this to me and tell me how to=20 get these charcters to work. I have the email formatting=20 set on rich text and Western European (windows). Thanks=20 in advance. Tony. |

The only way to get these characters is to copy and paste from character map. I would copy the characters to a draft. Open the draft when you need one of the characters. -- Ron Sommer "Tony Vella" wrote in message ... use of special characters in emails
Hi Tony,
Thanks for renewing my interest in the Character Map. You've provided quite a puzzle g. I had a devil of a time using copy/paste. The characters sometimes showed correctly...at other times there would be just a small empty square that ended up only displaying a normal letter when sent. I found that these characters can be selected (in the Character Map), then dragged into the message. The Character Map stays on top through the drag. With the OE message window it was somewhat difficult to get the character to land in the right spot (when dragging there was no blinking insert indicator). This was not the case with WordPad. Using a rich text message it was possible to add a character by using the code given below to the source. I'll try this here between the angle brackets: C. It worked. Now we'll see if this is displayed in the newsgroup in the correct way. C c Ċ ċ E e Ė ė G g Ġ ġ Z z Ż ż H h Ɗ Ƌ -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim MVP - (IE/OE) Lynnwood, WA * "Tony Vella" wrote in message ... Hi Tim.
Thanks very much for trying to help. Unfortunately when=20 I follow your instructions all I get is &# and the 3 =20 numbers - there is no conversion to the character I want. Another annoyance is the fact that I cannot drag from the=20 charcter map to word or notepad or wordpad. So now I am=20 really lost. Hi Tony,
Don't give up hope yet. Are you using Windows XP? If not, that could be the problem. If so, first click on the character, and then (click and hold) to drag and drop. The help file for Character Map should tell if drag and drop is available. Did you add the code to the source for the message, not in the message directly? -- Tim K. aka Kuay Tim MVP - (IE/OE) Lynnwood, WA * "tony vella" wrote in message ... Hi Tim. use of special characters in emails
Thanks again Tim.
I have included the &#'s in the code and they work fine. =20 I have even sent a short email to my cousin and she read=20 all the Maltese characters correctly. So that solved=20 that problem, thanks to you! Now here comes another. If you can picture inserting a=20 &# code every time you have an accent in French you can=20 imagine how tedious the exercise can become after a=20 while. Now, every second word in Maltese has a special=20 character if not two; so writing Maltese with &# codes is=20 like 10 times the aggravation of doing it in French. To=20 solve this problem would be to find an alt*** like the=20 French alt130, alt138, etc. which would make writing=20 Maltese characters no more and no less tedious than any=20 other accented vowels in other languages. =20 Any ideas???? Thanks in advance. Tony Vella in Ottawa, Canada. -----Original Message----- Hi Tony, Don't give up hope yet. Are you using Windows XP? If=20 not, that could be the problem.
