Default Picture Positioning

Why does Word allow pictures to go into the footer area of the page if the
"move picture with text" option is selected and I add text before the
picture? When I've got pictures get low on the page, I need to manually
insert carriage returns to force that picture to jump to the next page. That
screws up my formatting if I end up having to take a paragraph out or add
some more.

Isn't there a setting that will force Word to move pictures to the next page
if there isn't enough room for them?

Put the picture into the cell of a table that is set so that the row is not
permitted to break across pages.

Hope this helps.

If the pictures are formatted as In Line With Text, they will behave the
same as text, but that isn't always what you want, since sometimes you need
text to flow back up and fill the space above a picture that has moved to
the next page.

How do I put a picture in a table cell? When I copy the picture, and put the
cursor into the cell and hit "Paste", the picture isn't put into the cell. It
appears back on the page where it used to be.

You have to change the wrapping of the picture to In Line With Text.

You have make the picture inline with text first.

As I said to Suzanne, for some reason the "Inline" option is not available.
Does it make a difference that I've actually got several items (a photo, a
text box, an arrow) grouped together, and it's that resultant object I want
to position?

What's odd is that I don't have that option available anymore....it's ghosted
out and not selectable.

These "pictures" are actually a grouping of objects...like a photgraph, an
arrow, and a text box grouped into one object. Does that make a difference?

I broke Word.

Yes, if the group includes drawing objects, then I guess it becomes a
drawing object. Drawing objects can be made inline in Word 2003 but perhaps
not in earlier versions. What would happen if you copied the whole thing and
used Paste Special | As Picture?
