Default "error 1304. error writing to file" can't install

I purchased Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007 (Windows XP/Vista) from "The
Ultimate Steal" site.

I am attempting to install to a computer with XP home edition 2002 OS and
Office 2003 student teacher already installed. I could find no answer to the
question of whether I should uninstall previous versions so I chose "upgrade"
when I began the install, the only other option was "Custom" and I figured
I'm not knowledgeable enough to go that route.

Installation was stopped with the message "Error 1304. Error writing to file
C:\WINDOWS\System32\WISPTIS.EXE"
I have searched in vain to find an exact match for this problem, visiting
several troubleshooting sites including Microsoft and several independent
tech sites to no avail.

All references to "error 1304" address either "Vista" OS and/or earlier
versions of Microsoft Office i.e. 2003 and the solutions given don't appear
to apply to my situation.

I have considered beginning the install again and using "custom" or
uninstalling my current version but now I am leery about compounding the
problem.

As an added treat for my addled mind the message "Error 1712. One or more
files required to restore your computer to its previous state could not be
found restoration will not be possible." popped up as the installation rolled
back.

One more point, I wonder if this problem could have anything to do with the
OS, this computer is using the NTFS file system, does this software require
Fat32? If that is the case My external hard drive is Fat32, can an
application such as this be installed and run from external hard drive?
Please forgive me if I am complicating things with my ignorance.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I think I will look on the
bright side, I am through with classes until fall, it's not like I have a
term paper due.

Aloha

Does 2003 version still function?
Upgrade is usually the correct option
NTFS / Fat makes no difference, NTFS is reccommended
Delete all temp files, reboot, log on as the Administrator and try the
upgrade installation again

Hello DL,
Thank you for responding, I must offer my apologies for neglecting to
acknowledge your reply. After I posted here I managed to gather up my
courage and uninstall the old version, after that the install of the new
version went on without a hitch. I should have trusted my instincts in the
first place then I wouldn't have had to bother anyone.
The ultimate is so wonderful I feel like a kid in a candy store, it is well
worth the trouble.
Again, Mahalo and Aloha
