Default Read-only modifications

I have saved a template as a read-only document, but now cannot open it to make modifications. Yes, I have done the tools/options/security/password exercise - I get nothing to enter the password in when re-opening the document. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

In windows, with Word closed, try right-clicking on the template and picking
"properties."

One of the properties may be "read-only" under the General Tab. If so,
uncheck it. Otherwise, open the template and use SaveAs to save to a
different name.
