I have a new hard drive with a fresh copy of Windows XP. My copy of Office
2003 was previously installed on the old hard drive. I am unable to install
the CD, I get an error message that I have not entered a valid product key.
My guess is that this copy of office is registered with my old hard
drive and will not let me register it again.
How can I release the old registration and start from scratch?

Where are you getting the key from? If from the bottom or back of the
computer that is for the operating system, not Office. The Office key is
located on the back or inside the package that the CD was shipped with. It
is normally orange in color and states not to lose this. Use a magnifying
glass to ensure you are typing the correct characters as B & 8, S & 5, and O
and 0 look similar and can really be misread.

If, when the "fresh copy" of XP was installed onto the new hard drive did
the person use a system restore process to return to the original factory
state? If so, make sure that there is not an installed version of Office
trial. Go to Control Panel, Add/remove programs and see. If so uninstall
and then reboot the computer before attempting to install from the Office
CD.

Hi- I am having a similar problem with a twist.
My laptop died recently and all my software is still on it. I cannot get on
the laptop to uninstall my office 2003 pro (which is an OEM version).

I have a brand new comp and I want to install the old software- which I did.
Most of it worked, but outlook didn't so I uninstalled the entire office
suite (and the 0ffice 2007 trial, just to be safe) in order to start fresh.
Now I cant install office at all. I get a "Product Key Error" mssg. I have
typed it in many times and quintuple checked my S's and 5's and 8's and B's
and everything else.

I am working with Windows "Mojave".

What do I need to do?

Tks-
