Default Automatic link Update

I created a database in Excel 2003, then I created templates in Word 2003 with Links to the database. The problem is that if I make changes in my database, these changes are not being updated automatically in the Word documents. I have the box checked in Word to do so, I tried adding the FieldCalcSecurityLevel in the Registry. Nothing seems to work; can someone help?

Hi Claudio,

How did you create the links? Did you use Paste Special? Do the links display under Edit/Links?

Do you have "Update automatic links at Open" turned on under Tools/Options/General?

How and where did you create the FieldCalcSecurityLevel in the Registry? Is it located at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\W ord\Options

Did you create a DWORD or a String? What value did you provide? 0? 1? 2?

Default Automatic link Update

Hi Claudio,

Hmmm....they should automatically update when you open the document,
so more questions and things to try. ;-)

Were the links were set to "Automatic update" in the Edit/Links dialog
box.?

Press Alt + F9 to toggle the field codes. Does the link contain the /a
switch near the end of the field? What is the field name? Is it LINK
Excel.Sheet.8?

When you used a value of 2 for the Reg hack were you prompted to
update the document at open? Also can you manually update the links?

Hi Claudio,

Hi Claudio,

This doesn't make sense. :-(

The links are correct, you have the correct options turned on, Field Security is set correctly, but the links aren't updating.

When you are prompted to update the links on open do you encounter a message? Also watch the Status Bar and see if a message appears there as well.

Also, you might check in Excel and under Tools/Options/General and see if "Ignore other applications" is turned on. This didn't make a difference when I tried it but it is something to check out.

Hi Beth
When you are prompted to update the links on open do you encounter a message?
Yes, a message comes up and I click YES.
Also watch the Status Bar and see if a message appears there as well.
The status bar appears normal.

Also, you might check in Excel and under Tools/Options/General and see if "Ignore other applications" is turned on.
No, it is not turned on.

Thanks again,

Hi Claudio,

Out of curiosity, do you use Norton AV?

If you do then I'm wondering if the Office Plug-in option in Norton is preventing the update. Go to Norton Options in the Miscellaneous section turn off "Enable Office Plug-in".

If you don't use Norton then what virus scanner do you use?

Also where is the source file stored? On your local drive or network? If network does the same behavior occur if you link to a file on your local drive?

Hi Beth, we do use Norton Anitvirus, but we couldn't find "Enable Office Plug-in", but we chose the box to "Exclude selected files and folders" and excluded the entire directory, but it didn't do anything. The database is stored in a network environment in my office, but it is in a local drive at home, and I don't have NA there, but it's doing the same. I did find a Microsoft document (Q185430) where it says that they have confirmed that this is a problem. I hope they work on it quickly to resolve it.

Hi Claudio,

The article you found is for Word 98, a Mac version of Word, but it's
possible the same issue occurs in PC versions of Word..I suspect the
problem is either corrected in a current update or upcoming update

Unfortunately I can't provide any other suggestions at this point but
I do recommend you go to http://office.microsoft.com/home/default.aspx
and make sure Office has all the updates and watch for future updates.
