Default spacing for Word 2007

I am a relatively new user of subject software. When opening Word, I get the
standard "blank" page. So, I tried typing a sample text and then "entering"
to see where the cursor went for the 2nd line. It double spaces. I tried to
get the cursor to only single space by using the buttons at the top and also
consulting the "Help" section.

Could someone help me to set the spacing to "single" space?

Thanks,

In the Paragraph Styles.

You could use the "Style Gallery" thing to hunt for a prepackaged one
you like, or you could alter the out-of-the-box defaults.

Go to Home Styles the tiny arrow in the lower right corner. Right-
click on the name of a style in the window that appears -- such as
"Normal." Adjust the line spacing and the Space After.

I tried to follow you, and so I opened a file that I had saved.
The file was already opened so I examined "home""style",
and I observed the tiny arrow in the style section which had
four groupings. I clicked on the arrow, and a window came
up and whole list of items, one of which was "normal". When
I right-clicked on "normal", I got a menu consisting of the following
items: (1) Update normal to match selection, (2) Modify,
(3) Select all 8 instances, (4) clear formating of 8 instances, and
(5) remove from Quick Style Gallery.

I am lost since I don't see "Adjust the line spacing and the Space
after", which you alluded to.
