Default How can I merge unprotected cells in a protected worksheet?

I have a protected worksheet that allows users to edit unprotected cells.
Each cells can be formatted but not merge.

You cannot merge cells on a protected worksheet even if the cells are
unlocked.

Count yourself fortunate.

Now you won't have those merged cells which cause no end of problems.
