Default Windows closes down Publisher 2003 installation

I cannot email Microsoft about this because the program won't instal so I
cannot get a PID number.
My original installation seemed to be successful until I tried to open a
file in it when I got the 'Windows has had to close this program down .. tell
Microsoft 'message. This failed every time, so I tried the 'repair' option
from the CD, but still got the same message. I then tried to uninstal and
reinstal. Same result. I tried cleaning my registry etc but same result.
The fault seems to be that the installer still seems to recognise that the
program has been installed before, and fails to write to the temp cache in
drive D:
Here is an extract from the log found in the temp. file. ANy suggestions?

Default Windows closes down Publisher 2003 installation

When you get the first error, when you click details what does it say?
This article talks about your error, although it addresses the Office update. It does
have pertinent information.
You cannot install an Office 2003 service pack

You could try the CleanUp utility. This has worked for me...

I have tried the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility after each aborted attempt.
I went to the article you suggested but it seems to be dealing with error
messages rather than aborted installations?

Default Windows closes down Publisher 2003 installation

Hello again,
I have gone to the section you suggested and had a look at the registry,
but I am really none the wiser as I cannot find a GUID for Publisher in
either of the sections it mentioned? Since it is not a download I don't know
all the places I should be looking?

Do you have any other Office 2003 products installed? The article to which I directed
you is the only one available with your errors. If you have other Office 2003
products I would try step 2

Do you have an anti-virus application? Disable it when you install.

Frequently asked questions about the Local Install Source feature in Office 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/830168/

You receive an error message when you try to install an Office 2003 program
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;826317

I hope some of this helps.

I have exactly the same error while installing office 2003. (This error
is descrribed quite a few times; on web BB's the answers aren't very
well, but as usual, the USEnet answers are better. However all those
answers appear in different ng's, and there quite a few concerning ms.
So if you couldn't solve it, maybe the usenet archive might be of some
help. Anyway, for me the usenetanswers were better but not yet good
enough.)

My case = a complete office 2003 install. It seems the original office
2003 installer files were removed, so I couldn't remove office2003 the
normal way. I did it with the installer-remover msicuu2.exe, I cleaned
the registry, but I get the same error as the OP describes. Further, I
get the same error when I try to install the listool.exe now

So what should I remove so my pc hasnt got anymore 'evidence' that there
used to be an office installation?

thx
