Default Product Key/ Activation Help

Before I get too far off my subject - my question is
Is it worth my time to Call Microsoft to try to do this!

I bought Office 2000 or Whatever it was called in 2003
The Computer I had at the time Choked and could not load it. (Dinosaur)
Time Passes - Dinosaur Dies, I finally got a new Computer

Looking through all my old stuff I come across the Office CD complete with
Pretty Holograms so it cannot be duplicated or forged. A real Honest to
goodness legal copy- Horay!

The Problem is - It's not in the Original Case, and Looking at EVERYTHING I
own
(I know I packed it all and put everything in storage and moved across the
country) I have no Idea what happened to the silly Jewel Case) Which is
where the CD Key is located.

I know there are Pirated CD Keys on the net, but that won't fly since they
use the activation step.

Now back to the question - Is it worth calling Microsoft to register this,
will they work with me if I scan or fax a Picture of me holding the original
CD? Is the Hologram of any value whatsoever? Or will they shut me down for
loosing the jewel case?

Mike

Simple English when asking a question is more appreciated than an attempt at
humor.

What did you buy, and what is the exact problem. Insert the CD and see what
version you have that you are having the problem with.

He hasn't got the serial/PID number so he should just forget it and
instead consider taking some exercise by walking to his nearest store to
buy a new Office 2003 box! Simple and Bill Gates becomes a happy man!

Default Product Key/ Activation Help

I have a similar problem. My software (Microsoft Office 2003 Small Business)
came bundled with the $1300 Dell Inspiron 6000 computer. I had to restore my
system back to the default settings (which was done without a CD...because
they don't give you anything like that anymore). Reinstall was successful
except that I do not have the product key to reactivate. I called Dell and
they said I would have to buy another CD... (I didn't even get a 1st CD...it
was prebundled). Here is a copy of our conversation via email:

Default Product Key/ Activation Help

How is it possible to have the "it's not in the original case" problem?

You buy office and bring it home or have it shipped to you.

It comes in a box and inside the box is a jewel case or a DVD case.

On the product key sticker affixed to the case, it say 'Don't lose this
key!'

(I'm not sure about Office, but for XP it specifically states the disk is
USELESS without the key.)

So you install Office, and put the CD back in the case.

Usually you install Office once, and once in a while for updates or
installing additional components, you have to insert the original CD, or
maybe if your system dies or you have to reinstall the OS because of a
virus.....

So, in all those situations, you take the CD out of the original case, use
it, and put it back.

It's not like you do it 50 times and there's a chance it gets misplaced
after a while.

How is it possible?

Oh, I burned a CD of all my favorite recipes but I have no case for it,
wait, take that office CD out of it's case with the product key, don't want
this CD of my recipes to get ruined...

Anyway, it cost a few hundred dollars, so you have to treat it carefully, or
plan to spend some extra money.

The good this is that Office 2003 is much better than Office 2000....

Default Product Key/ Activation Help

Actually, I just remembered...

When I got my Dell I had to enter the product key and activate Office 2003.
It came installed, but not activated. On the first start of Office, I was
prompted to enter the product key affixed to the CD sleeve that Office
shipped in.

Along with checking the the invoice for a product key, if it shows in fact
you did purchase Office with your Dell, Dell should be able to help you.

Microsoft as always claimed that if you lose your key.
The would issue a new one.

If he registered is copy with Microsoft, he should be able to get a
new key. Otherwise, he may have to fax or mail in the copy of the
cd.

This is assuming it a retail version. If it an oem with the same
computer-he needs to contact the company he bought it from. if out if
business microsoft will usually help.

Just be cause some lost the key. He should not have to buy another
program.

Default Product Key/ Activation Help

Rochelle,

It is possible to get the serial key by using the beta version of
MagicJelly program. Try this link:

http://www.magicaljellybean.com/kfbeta.shtml

The OP didn't have his CD installed so it was not possible to advise him
anything except to tell him to buy a new one.

I have a similar problem. My software (Microsoft Office 2003 Small Business)
came bundled with the $1300 Dell Inspiron 6000 computer. I had to restore my
system back to the default settings (which was done without a CD...because
they don't give you anything like that anymore). Reinstall was successful
except that I do not have the product key to reactivate. I called Dell and
they said I would have to buy another CD... (I didn't even get a 1st CD...it
was prebundled). Here is a copy of our conversation via email:

Thank you for contacting Dell Consumer Hardware Warranty Support Chat. My
name is Milan. Please allow me a moment to review your question.
{Milan 9:01:06 PM} May I have your name and telephone number as on the
account?
{Milan 9:03:17 PM} Thank you Rochelle and the product key is on the sleeve
of the MS office CD.
{Rochelle 9:03:53 PM} I dont have it...it came loaded on the computer
{Milan 9:04:39 PM} You didn't get any CD along with the computer?
{Rochelle 9:04:57 PM} No....it came prebundled with the software
{Rochelle 9:05:07 PM} I have an Inspiron 6000
{Milan 9:05:25 PM} I need to check this up and this will take me five
minutes, bear with me.
{Rochelle 9:05:43 PM} I bought it on 4/17/05 and the invoice number is
********
{Milan 9:06:35 PM} Ok I am checking this up.
{Rochelle 9:06:42 PM} thank you
{Milan 9:13:06 PM} Thank you for your patience Rochelle and I see that the
CD was shipped along with the computer.
{Rochelle 9:13:27 PM} I really did not get a CD...
{Rochelle 9:13:42 PM} All the programs were on the computer already
{Rochelle 9:14:29 PM} I just did a reinstall on the whole system by hitting
ctrl F-11 and it reinstalled everything from the computer itself...no disk
{Rochelle 9:22:50 PM} restored my system to factory settings but don't know
my product key # to access Microsoft Office
{Rochelle 9:23:36 PM} Hello?
{Milan 9:23:58 PM} Ok Rochelle according to the warranty you have to inform
about the CD within 30 days of purchase however let me check if I can resend
it.
{Milan 9:23:59 PM} My apologies for this delay, we are facing some technical
issues here.
{Rochelle 9:24:21 PM} okay...thanks
{Milan 9:24:26 PM} I will arrange the dispatch and this will take me ten
minutes, meanwhile could you confirm the address and telephone number for
shipping purpose.

{Milan 9:26:53 PM} My apologies Rochelle however we will not be able to ship
across the CD as it a royalty software and the system wont let me do it.
{Rochelle 9:27:54 PM} What can I do then, because I paid for it and I have
it but it is asking for product key code
{Milan 9:31:29 PM} Rochelle the CD will be in different box from the one
that the notebook has been shipped, and it is always shipped with the
notebook.
{Rochelle 9:32:32 PM} Well, it wasn't and I didn't know that I needed it
because it worked when I got the computer and the code on the bottom of the
computer labeled "product key" is not working and I am locked out of the
software
{Milan 9:36:40 PM} Well Rochelle the only option I see is buying the CD
again.
{Rochelle 9:37:09 PM} well, I am not going to do that ...thanks
{Milan 9:37:38 PM} My apologies for the inconvenience caused Rochelle and I
will give you the case number for reference

For the benefit of those who have Office already on the system, the key
can be obtained using this beta version of MagicJelly program. The link
is he

http://www.magicaljellybean.com/kfbeta.shtml

Please make a note of it for future reference and also download it
before it is taken out of circulation.

He should not have to buy another
program.
