Default Unable to install Office 2003; FP 2003 or any 2003 viewer other than PowerPoint 2003 Viewer

The symptoms are that the installation calls for the Product Key (I am using
MSDN versions) and then the installation just dies. This happens for Office
2003 Pro; OneNote 2003 and FP 2003 - also for the Word 2003 Viewer (and if I
remember right the Excel 2003 Viewer) although the Power Point 2003 Viewer
does install OK.

I have tried using the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;290301

with no effect (once re-booting after the run; once not)

This routine is suppose to asked you to specify what it wants you to tidy
up. It doesn't. But goes right into Finish saying "according to your
specification" (or similar words).

This machine is a portable running Windows 2003 Server; Windows SharePoint
Services and SQL Server 2K 3a. That however is not the problem as FrontPage
2003 was installed (and worked well) on it. [I am now hugely regretting
having removed that as part of my efforts to install other parts of Office
2003 !!!]

Does anyone have any additional selections apart from the Windows Installer
CleanUp Utility. [Re-booting after one of these installation tries always
gave WMI errors so this was something close.]

This seems likely to be a "feature" of Windows 2003 Server SP1.

Certainly after removing that, I am now (at this moment) seeing (on
installing Office 2003 *again*) screens I haven't on previous attempts on
this machine.

(and that copy of FP 2003 that was previously installed was probably
installed prior to Win 2003 Server SP1)

I will confirm in a reply to this message if that was indeed the solution.

(Posting now to possibly save other people's time needlessly)

Just to confirm.

Removing Win 2003 Server SP1 made installing Office 2003 Professional
possible again.

There were no other changes made between a non-possible and a possible
installation.

Hi Mike,

Hmmm. Was the Windows Installer v3.1 critical update installed
after SP1 was in place?

I had a similar problem, only it was XP SP2 that broke Office. I'm stuck
with SP1 because I can't install or use Office after installing SP2.

Hi Mike,

In this case it's not so much the order, but to be sure
that you have the Installer v3.1 critical update in
place after installing Windows 2003 Server SP1.
My understanding is that the installer may not work
correctly with Office and other MSI apps without the
update to MSIexec.exe

Windows 2003 SP1 RTM already has the installer 3.1 update in the SP1 =
package. The SP1 Beta does not. Maybe he has the Beta of SP1 still on =
his system.

Maybe he has the Beta of SP1 still on his system.

That's possible. Probable in fact as this portable was being used for my own
testing purposes before demos to customers came into the picture.

(and of course it's not there any more).

Bob: I (now) installed the 3.1 installer and later the (real) SP1.

I am now on re-boot getting three "Windows Installer failed ..." messages.

However that seems to be irrelevant at least to the original problem as the
Word Viewer has now (after SP1) installed OK which it didn't before.

Thanks to both of you.
