Joanne--Yes, I realize that Safe Mode is not the same as formatting my
computer's hard drive.

DL--Yes, I know that you made no mention of formatting.

I was simply asking whether I should consider formatting the hard drive
and
completely reinstalling everything. Nothing that has been suggested so
far
seems to work.
Sorry for the sarcasm.

There's got to be a way to reinstall Office without reformatting the

I've tried the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility then reinstalling
but
it
still gets only so far on the reinstall then hangs.

If I posted my installation log file would someone be able to take
a
look
at
it and tell me what might be causing the hangup?

I'm about at my wit's end.

OK--here's my scenario. I installed Microsoft Office
Professional
Eidtion
2003 (full version) a couple of years ago on my Dell Dimension
E510
computer with Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002
Service
Pack
3
.
The installation went fine and I've applied all updates
including
Security
updates and SP3. I've used all of the modules (Outlook, Word,
Access,
Excel, Publisher) with no problems since I installed it.
I am running Bit Defender Total Security 2008 Anti-virus and
Firewall.
To
the best of my knowledge my computer does not have any viruses.
All
of
the other programs on my computer work just fine.

A couple of weeks ago one of the Windows Security updates for
Office
2003
kept "hanging" and would not install. So I got the
not-so-brainy
idea
to
uninstall Office 2003 and reinstall it
using the original installation CD. When I tried to reinstall
it
the
installation gets to a certain point but then it won't complete
(I've
waited for hours). If I try to open any of the modules I can
go in and they all seem to work fine. But I can't seem to
cancel or
quit
the installation and the next time I reboot the computer I get
error
messages when I try to open them.

For example, when trying to open Outlook I get this message:
"Cannot
start Microsoft Office Outlook. MAPI32.DLL is corrupt or the
wrong
version. This could have been caused by installing other
messaging
software. Please reinstall Outlook."

And when I try to open Word or Excel I get this message:
"Problem
with
shortcut. This action is only valid for products that are
currently
installed".

So here I am owning a license to dthe full version of Office
Professional
Edition 2003 but now I can't seem to install, uninstall, or
repair
it.
Please help!!

Default Can't repair or reinstall Office 2003 Professional Edition

Well, I finally was able to install MS Office Professional 2003. However it
still didn't make it to the finish line. The window never came up with
message "Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 Setup Completed".

Now I'm trying to install SP3 and that update just hangs with the message
window that says "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office
Professional Edition 2003" with the progress bar showing about half way.

Maybe I will end up having to reformat my computer hard drive, reinstall the
OS, then install MS Office Pro 2003?

Does anyone have additional suggestions before I take this drastic measure?

Thanks!

If office hasnt installed correctly an sp is unlikely to complete.

Presumably you have run a memory check www.memtest.org and the disk checking
utility from you hd makers site, eg SeaTools from Seagate? - both these
tools are more thorough than any utility included by Dell
Before you take any nucleur option

Can you obtain a copy of spinrite from GRC. See if the hard drive is
causing the problem.

http://www.grc.com

You could try Gibsons Spinrite and see if the drive will recover.

http://www.grc.com

http://www.virushackerfreeinanhour.c...-problems.html

Also perfrom a Chkdsk in windows and maybe optimize your PC with PC
utilities 2009.

Last but not least make sure that CD is clean and run a spyware check
with Malwarebytes.
