Default Force monospace (barcode font)?

I have a barcode font that needs to be monospace. In other words, when I use
it in notepad.exe and print, it scans fine. When I use it and print in
Publisher, it doesn't. Someone told me that was because Publisher (and Word)
automatically proportionally space, which ruins the enc oding. (To find the
font I'm using, google "free three of nine font".)

Can anyone think of a way around this? Thanks in advance. Craig Wilson,
Fairfield, CA (school librarian)

All programs that can use proportional fonts use proportional spacing,
otherwise your Notepad documents typed in Arial would look typewritten,
with pools of white around narrow letters like 'i' and 'l'. You might
check/disable Publisher's kerning options, in Format Character Spacing
(or as a subelement of Format Font; I don't have 2003 installed to
check). Otherwise I don't know why this would be occurring.
