Default stop number to date conversion

is there a switch (i haven't been able to find one) for turning off
automatic number to date conversions? currently i have to keep all cells
formatted to text, to avoid this, and not have 1-2 turn into jan 2. or
having to remember to type apostrophe before. i'd rather leave format
default to general, except for the annoying date conversion.

is there any way to stop this behaivor?

There's no setting.

You could change the format to Text, but that ain't general.
