Put those dates in D1 and D2

=SUMIF(A:A,"="&D1,C:C)-SUMIF(A:A,"="&D2,C:C)

Default Sum If ???

its more complicated than that
Col A
list of dates an employee was absent

Col C, E & G (diff types of time off)
hours of time off they used

I want a formula to sum for "January" all hours used of time off.

We were supposed to know that?

And now we are supposed to know what the time off codes are?

I think you would do well to map out the full problem with data.
