Default How do I stop my cursor defaulting as an eraser in powerpoint?

I have recently installed Microsoft Office 2007 and on powerpoint the cursor
is defaulting as an eraser. Consequently as I create slides they do not show
up until either I run the cursor over them or I press enter to finish the
slide. It must be a setting but I can not locate where to turn it off.
