Large file in Publisher 2007 - publisher hangs

I am creating a 'leavers book' for my child at school and so far it is 830Mb
and due to get bigger as it contains loads of pictures/photos.
Publisher periodically hangs not responding, but eventually comes back and i
am concerned that this will get worse as it gets bigger. I have noticed from
the resource monitor a no of hard page faults (less since upgraded PC) and
heavy disc activity.
Also will I have problems converting to PDF and printing.
I have a new PC (last w/e) with Pentium Dual core, running at 2.9Ghz, with
4Gb Ram, Virtual mem=8Gb and page file space 4Gb. Running W7 home premium.
Any suggestions grateful received or early notice of potential problems down
the line.

Have you updated your graphics/video driver lately?

Maybe sliding down the accelerator for this one publication might help.

In theory Publisher can handle a 2 GB publication. Try changing the View,
Pictures, to Fast Resize and Zoom.

If you have a network drive, it will help to disconnect it. Right-click My
Computer.

In addition to what Mary suggests, have you looked into reducing the file
size by modifying the book?

How many pages in the book now?

When you are pasting the photos, are you first reducing the size from the
camera originals?

Many digital camera now are 7-10 megapix, and when shot at full res, produce
files of several meg a piece, for photos pasted into a book, especially if
they are only a 1/4 size are so, they could be reduced and still look fine.

If you haven't already, you could try using the "compress pictures" for all
the photos (right-click on a picture, choose Format Picture and then the
Compress button), then save the file (under a different name to be safe),
and compare the size.

In addition to Mary's comments, I hope it isn't necessary to remind you to
make backup copies of your Pub file.

Also, have you tried compressing the pictures in the file? You might be able
to reduce the file size significantly.
