Default Outlook Express has encountered a problem and needs to close...recapitulation..

A new post, hopefully to gain even more attention...! My other post on the
same topic, is unresolved. To recapitulate...

I have Windows XP2 (completely reinstalled after reformatting last month),
latest patch level, IE7 for 4 weeks and Outlook Express 6.

Before the latest Microsoft automatic updates earlier this month, the
following problem
did not exist. I was enjoying a completely clean and exemplary system !

In OE6, part way during downloading emails, the "needs to close" message
appears.

I've discovered that the emails continue to fully download if I ignore the
closedown message (of course I then have to allow the closedown).

The error signature in the closedown message says "AppName: msimn.exe" and
"ModName: directdb.dll".

No closedown message appears when sending emails, or when sending or
receiving newsgroup messages.

I've successfully compacted all OE6 folders - as recommended by Tom Koch.

I've done scans for any malware (viruses, spyware, trojans etc.) - none
found.

I've also deactivated the McAfee VirusScan on emails and downloads.

I've reset to another OE identity - as recommended by Tom Koch.

I've defragmented all drives.

I've successfully installed the patch KB918766 - as recommended by PA Bear.

A new problem - IE7 has today also started to produce the same "need to
close" message. Its error signature says iexplore.exe is in conflict with
ieframe.dll, or on another occasion mshtml.dll.

I strongly suspect that this latest misbehaviour by IE7 is related to my
ongoing OE6 problem.

And is the fact that the problems only started immediately after the latest
automatic updates by Microsoft, a total coincidence?

Could the OE6 Rules be part of the problem?

I've run out of ideas! What else could be wrong? And how do I fix it?

Any error associated with directdb.dll is due to corruption in one or more
of the DBX files in the message store folder, usually caused by shutting
down Outlook Express or forcing a shutdown while compacting is taking place.
If you go to the folder containing the stored message files (DBX files) you
may see some with a number appended which indicates they have been corrupted
and a new one has been created without the number to replace it. For added

As for the problem with IE7, the main recommendation would be to uninstall
it via Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs until you've resolved your mail

Have you done a thorough malware check? Checking with one program is seldom
adequate.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Hello

I think I may have solved my problem !

I switched off all my OE rules (68 altogether). After more than 24 hours and
several downloads of emails, there's been no 'need to close' message.

I've now reactivated half of my rules, and will wait another 24 hours to see
if things remain stable.

I intend to gradually reintroduce my rules until or unless OE misbehaves
again. Then maybe I'll be able to identify the culprit rule (or rules).

It's also notable that IE7 has remained stable also...

I'll report further as matters progress. Then somebody cleverer than me
could possibly advise what the real problem was and advise how to avoid
anyone else seeing the same problem.

To respond to Frank's point about malware; no, I haven't done an extensive
disinfection. Just used McAfee and Spybot. If things go wrong again, I'll
follow-up on his suggestions. In the meantime I'll proceed along the lines
explained above. (And I'm extremely careful these days about what I download
and install. 'Been there...done that' !)

Yes, it ***was*** the OE6 filter rules that were causing the OE6 "...need to
close..." messages. With all my rules reactivated the problem reappeared.

Did a thorough review of my 68 rules and by consolidating many of them
reduced the total quantity to less than 40. All seems stable now...and that
includes IE7 also!

Sorry but in the end I didn't attempt to determine which were the culprit
rule (or rules). I got fed-up with the whole situation and concentrated on
getting my OE and IE stable...!

Thanks for all your suggestions. They were a great support in my endeavours!
