Default Using scanner in office97 applications

I have a HP 4370 ScanJet scanner attached to my PC by USB2.0 and it works OK.
However, there is no scanner option under "Insert" -- "Picture" for my
Office97 applications, e.g. Word97, Excel97. Apparently I need some sort of
Office97 add-on. What and where is it on the Office97 CD? How do I add the
scan option?

Have you considered scanning it in first, saving the file, then inserting
it?

IIRC, Office 97 did not offer this option as it was prior to scanners being
widely available (1996).

They were fairly common even then, though certainly not at today's almost-
disposable pricing. But talking to them required a special driver for each
individual scanner make and model. The amount of work involved would have
been astronomical, the rewards negligible.

Once the TWAIN standard was widely accepted and manufacturers started to ship
TWAIN-compliant drivers, it was a lot simpler for individual apps to support
scanner input. They simply needed to address the TWAIN driver to acquire
images from *any* TWAIN compatible scanner.

TWAIN was first ratified in 1992 but it took a while to catch on.

Let's hear it for standards! ;-)
