Default Word "save" command problems

Hello all. I have a big problem with Word 2002. When I save a
document, it is listed in the recently used documents in the right
pane. When I click on it, I get a long error message stating that the
"document name or path is not valid. "Check the file permissions."

The document has been renamed by Word. For example, a doc I called
OLLI NL is now "\5N3HZPZ4\OLLI NL".

When I try to find the document in My Documents it doesn't exist.

I tried a couple of test docs and found that this happens every time I
hit "save." When I use "save as," the document doesn't acquire the
extra letters and numbers and I can open it.

I really need some help with this. I don't have any idea what has
happened to Word 2002, but some sort of major change obviously has
occurred.

Many thanks in advance.

My guess is some crap third party add-in that is interrupting the Save
command. Check out Tools, Macros and see what is listed. Anything with SAVE
in its title for instance is going to be a prime suspect. Also check out
what add-ins have been installed that 'plug in' to Word or Office.

Terry-Thanks for your very fast reply!

I checked my macros. There are none. Under the same menu where the
macro title is I have Visual Basic Editor and Microsoft Script Editor,
which the computer tells me is not installed.

Other suggestions?

BTW, I just ran Symantec and I have no viruses.

Are there any add-in templates listed under Tolls, templates and Add-ins?

If you start Word in Safe Mode, are you able to open, edit and save
correctly. From Start, Run, type in

winword /a

and press enter. This starts Word in Safe Mode. Open a document, make an
edit and press Save. Does it work correctly now?

Terry-Since my last post, I have been able to use a prior copy of my
newsletter, but all the copies that have the odd additional alpha-
numerics are deleted. I don't understand this at all!

In the meantime, I have rec'd a few e-mail messages with Word
attchmts. and those attachments went directly to Word, without my
"telling them to do so," and, again, the attachments show up in the
right pane list and when I click on them I get the same odd message.
And, of course, I can't open them.

After I ran Symantec this morning, I did update the virus
definitions. I am wondering if that is why I can use the doc. I saved
as OLLI NL. My Symantec does not go out and look for new virus
definitions, apparently, but why am I suddenly able to access one of
the copies of my original doc. and why, at the same time, do new e-
mail attchmts. show up with the error message I originally wrote to
you about?

Oh boy, always so many mysteries. If you have suggestions, please,
please let me know. Peggy
