When I log in in the morning, the number of unread message in a newsgroup
(any newsgroup) is shown as, say, 900 but, on refreshing that number is
reduced to, say, 200..

Just out of curiosity, what is happening here?

Regards.

Do you have any message rules set up in the news section that may be acting?

When checking mail on the assigned schedule OE gets an estimate of the
number of new messages based on the latest message ID in the DBX file for
the newsgroup and the latest message ID on the server. Once you enter the
newsgroup it downloads the headers and gives you the correct number. The
estimate can be way off especially if you access a different server on a
server farm and they are out of synch.

Answer in newsgroup. Don't send mail.

You are most likely set to download x00 messages at a time rather than all
messages, and to download NEW headers. As a result, OE only downloads new
headers, not the older but still unread ones.

You can either click Catch-Up to remove them all, or, after you've marked an
All Read, leave the group, come back to it, and click Headers in the top
menu; that will download older headers.

Or, remove the restrictions on download New Headers only. It's all in the
Tools, Options.
