Office 2007 Trial conversion via MLK
Hi,
My laptop came preinstalled with a trial copy of Office 2007. From memory (I am pretty sure) it was the Professional version. At the moment, I bought a copy of Home and Student and installed that, but I will need to use the recovery discs to get my laptop back into factory state due to some recent virus attacks. This means that I will be back with the trial version of Office. I wish to buy a MLK so I won't have to uninstall the trial and won't have to reinstall the full version (and I am planning on giving my sister the Home and Office disc and key, since it is a three user license version) to activate my Trial that initially comes with the laptop. Recently, I noticed that there are two versions of MLK, a version1 and a version2. I remember reading that the Office Pro 2007 trial can be converted to any of the full versions (with the appropriate MLK): Professional, Small Business Edition, and Basic. I am not interested in the Basic (too expensive and doesn't have powerpoint which I use alot). I am quite keen on the Small Business Edition since it is cheaper than the Pro MLK and only has the apps that I need (nothing more like Pro, but nothing less like Basic) The questions: - I read from Microsoft's Office trial conversion site that I can convert the trial version of Office 2007 Pro to a full version with any 'retail perpetual key' - does that mean I can convert my trial into a full version by buying a retail version of Office 2007 Professional (academic edition, which is cheaper than the MLK)? - If I have to buy a MLK, which version must I buy? Can I buy just any Pro or SME MLK (regardless of version 1 or 2) and type the key in, to convert my trial to a full version? - I know that when I install and use Office Home and Student, the programme window says 'NAME - not for commericial use'. Will a similar thing be present for the SBE of Office 2007? I know such issues are not present with the Professional edition though. A prompt response is greatly appreciated. I just want to know the answers to above so I can make an informed choice and not buy a MLK that doesn't activate my trial (since we can't return MLK once they are bought, this is to make sure I don't spend money incorrectly ^_^...) Thanks |

Thanks You can NOT "legally" use the MLK to license any version of software if the computer was purchased more than 90 days before. See http://www.microsoft.com/malaysia/of...ready/faq.mspx and part of that says: "Q: Why is there no backup disc in my box? A: The Medialess License Kit (MLK) does not contain a backup disc because your computer was preinstalled with the 2007 Microsoft Office suite and your computer reseller should have provided you with a Medialess License Kit (MLK). If your reseller did not provide you with a Medialess License Kit (MLK), you may not have been provided the proper license for your copy of Microsoft Office. Please consult your reseller to verify. " and "Q: Why do I need to provide the dates that I acquired my computer and the 2007 Microsoft Office suite? A: Microsoft needs to verify that your computer and 2007 Microsoft Office suite were purchased within 90 days of one another to ensure that your computer reseller properly licensed your 2007 Microsoft Office suite. We recommend you contact your computer reseller if you are ineligible to receive backup through this site. " AND "Q: Can I use the Microsoft Office suite trial software I downloaded from the Web to create backup discs? A: The trial software is not an OEM version and will not accept the OEM product key you have purchased. You will need to acquire a retail box of the Microsoft Office suite (with discs included) to perpetually activate a trial.' |

Doesn't sound very logical when it is Microsoft that is making the money (and me willing to spend it)... To clarify... The trial Office came preinstalled with this laptop. If I use the system recovery discs, then the laptop will go back to its factory state, meaning it will have everything that was installed at the factory - that means the Office trial will be on it. I am pretty sure that, since I haven't bothered activating the trial on this laptop in the past (never used the trial version of Office, just upgraded on the purchase day to Home and Student, which is now with my sister so don't have acess to). Can you reconfirm that I am NOT able to get a MLK with this edited info? Thanks |

Office 2007 Trial conversion via MLK
If you purchased more than 90 days ago and since the simple trial that is
preinstalled on most computers isn't the same one that the MLK uses to activate, NO. MLK won't activate it. I remember that when I bought my laptop (which was on Christmas), the store was giving away stuff with the laptop (had to choose between a mp3 and a Office 2007 Basic MLK, and I chose the mp3 since the Basic version of Office was too featureless for me...). I guess the MLK will work, but since it has been over 90 days... Thanks for your help |
