Default I don't want to see the background page #s when a .xls is open

the background page numbers that Excel automatically puts in tghe background
of a spreadsheet make it hard for me to see some of my numbers. How can I
make them disappear?

If you're in pagebreak preview mode, you're going to see those numbers.
