Blocked Links IN OE6 Messages
I always used to be able to click on links in messages displayed in OE6
without any problem. For some reason now when I try and hover my mouse over a link it says blocked. If I try and click it Internet Explorer hangs and can't open the web page and I can only close the page using with Control/Alt/Del and have to wait for about 10 minutes during which time my computer becomes very unstable. IN IE6 secutity settings the block images and other external content is not checked. I have set internet zone. If I copy and paste the link to IE6 then I can get the page. Can anyone tell me how to unblock the links and make them work again? I have no idea why this has started happening. Your advice would be appreciated. Kind Regards Chris |

Please state your IE version and full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3;
Win2K SP4) when posting to this newsgroup. There is a very good chance that you are seeing the effects of a hijackware infection! NB: If you had no anti-virus application installed or the subscription had expired *when the machine first got infected* and/or your subscription has since expired and/or the machine's not been kept fully-patched at Windows Update, don't waste your time with any of the below: Format & reinstall Windows. A Repair Install will NOT help! 1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually: http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx NB: Run the FULL scan, not the QUICK scan! You may need to download the MSRT on a non-infected machine, then transfer MRT.EXE to the infected machine and rename it to SCAN.EXE before running it. 2. Blocked Links IN OE6 Messages
Thank you Bruce and PA Bear for your suggestions. I am using XP SP3 with IE8
recently upgraded and also recently upgraded from Norton System Works 2008 t0 2009. The problem also existed a day or two before I upgraded to IE8 when I was still using IE7. Links still do not work in OE6 but work fine within IE8 and Microsoft Word. IE8 is set as the default browser from Control Panel. OE6 is set to allow links and images. Yesterday when I hovered my mouse over a link in OE6 it showed the words blocked and the rest of the link but today I do not get this warning but the links are still blocked. Actually when I click a link IE8 does open with a blank page wiith no error message and it just hangs and I have to close with Control/Alt/Del which takes forever and the computer becomes unstable. I can still successfully copy and paste the link to IE8 and they work fine that way. I have checked: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929867 And all the setings seem to be correct. I can't understand Frank Saunders last line: If all the above is correct, uncheck: Use DDE. So is DDA supposed to be checked or unchecked? Yesterday I contacted Norton Support to see if any Norton settings were causing the problem and during the support session while the Norton Technician had remote access to my computer all the links in OE6 worked fine. All the Norton settings were set to default. However later that day the links failed again which is very puzzling. I dont know if the remote access by Norton stopped another process that was causing the issue? The Norton settings seem to be the same I did a quick maleware scan yesterday using Malware Bytes and nothing showed up. I will also do a full scan using the microsoft scanner suggested above to be sure. I did have a problem with Malware in the past which interfered with OE6 and IE6 so I am not underestimating the danger. I always keep a back up cloned hard drive for emergencies but I hope I will not have to use it. At the moment I suspect a third part process is causing the problem, perhaps Norton or something else. Thanks for your help and any further suggestions would be appreciated. Kind Regards Chris |

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you quote all of the previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you. In your first post, you said you were running IE6. Did this problem only start after you'd installed IE7 or did you upgrade to IE7 (and then IE8) in hopes of fixing the problem? Was your NSW 2008 subscription still current when you upgraded to NSW 2009? Did a Norton or McAfee (free-trial) application come preinstalled on your computer when you purchased it? ...I did have a problem with Malware in the past which interfered with OE6 and IE6 so I am not underestimating the danger. When was this and how did you resolve it? ...I always keep a back up cloned hard drive for emergencies but I hope I will not have to use it. Did you create this backup before or after the (previous) hijackware infections? Have you used this backup (recently)? Chris wrote: Thank you Bruce and PA Bear for your suggestions. Blocked Links IN OE6 Messages
Thanks for your reply.
It seems that the problem was caused by Norton System works and has been cured now by turning off the Internet setting "Intrusion Auto Block". Problem History: To answer some points I upgraded to IE8 from IE7 recently as well as to Norton System Works 2009. I upgraded to IE8 not to solve any problems but just because it was the latest version. I upgraded to NSW 2009 from 2008 while the subscription was still running on the advice of Norton support technician to solve a problem with product activation after cloning my system to a larger HD. I seem to recall the problem of the OE6 links not working existed before I upgraded to IE8. This issue started to occur in the last few days so thats why I started to consider all new programmes installed. In the meantime I followed your advice and did a full mailware scan using the microsoft programme. Happily, no malware showed up in the scan. The problem I had with malware over a years ago was for another issue of not being able to get certain pages in IE6 and also OE6 did not syncronise properly with my hotmail account and is unrelated to this problem so I am sorry for causing any confusion. It was solved by following your advice and removing the malware with the help of an anti malware forum. I think I originally got the malware by unzipping a zip file on an OE6 message without thinking. The back up clone of my HD was fairly recent and was made before the latest issue started. Generally I back up the clone weekly but as the previous malware was completely removed I have no reason to suspect any problem from the previous infection of over a year ago. To experiment I switched to Firefox and noticed the problem did not occur. When I switched back to IE8 as the default browser the problem stopped for a while but then reappeared after rebooting. By turning Norton anti virus off the problem stopped. When I turned Norton Anti virus on again the problem seemed to stop but would reappear maybe half an hour later or upon system reboot. I experimented and found a setting under Norton internet settings and turned off "intrusion autoblock". According to Norton, Autoblock automatically blocks all traffic between my computer and an attacking computer for 30 minutes by default. Turning this option off seems to have solved the issue. I hope it doesn't come back again. Thank you all for your help and suggestions with this issue. When upgrading a Norton application or when replacing it with another Norton
application, it's always advisable to (a) uninstall the current application (including LiveUpdate and any Norton Add-ons), (b) download/run the Norton Removal Tool [1], (c) reboot, and then (d) install the upgrade/new application so as to avoid such problems. When installing an IE upgrade or Windows Service Pack, it's advisable to (a) disable your anti-virus application, (b) any real-time system protections afforded by an installed security application, (c) any third-party firewall, and then (d) enable the Windows Firewall prior to the install. ====== [1] http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039 -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Client - since 2002 Chris wrote: Thanks for your reply. Chris wrote: I always used to be able to click on links in messages displayed in OE6 without any problem. |
