Default Merge Problem in header (Word 2002)

When I have a merge field in the header a number of
problems happen.

I have a 4 page doc with headers except on the first page.

The first page of the first letter looks fine. the first
page of the following letters shows the header on the
first page and also the previous record information. the
second page of the rest of the merge letters is fine as
well. The page numbers in the header works as well.

How do you have the mailmerge main document set up?

Under Page SetupLayout, under the Headers and footers section, you you have
the Different first page box checked to prevent the header appearing on the
first page? Or were you doing that in some other way?

Yes, thats what we were doing. I ended up doing a work
around. I removed the merge field from the header and
just added it as the first line of each page of the doc
except the first page and that pulled the correct data.
Still would like to know why it wouldn't work in the
header.

actually it seems that Word thought the first page was the
first page of all docs. What I mean is that if you did a
print of all records you could then do a print one at a
time but if you did an edit individual it had the wrong
data and the header on all first pages.

Hi Sandy,

I asked those questions because when I set up a multipage mailmerge main
document with a Primary Header and no First Page Header by having the
Different first page box checked under the Page SetupLayout dialog and
execute the merge, I could not replicate your problem. There was no merged
data in the first page header of any of the formletters created by the
merge, but the merged data appeared corrrctly in the second and following
pages in each formletter. In other words, the different first page setup up
from the mailmerge main document is correctly replicated into each section
in the document produced by executing the merge.

If you still have a copy of the problem mailmerge main document (or you can
re-create the problem) if you want to send the mailmerge main document to
me, I will take a look at it and try and see what's wrong.
