Default Merge cells with page breaks

I've created a table, where the first column is a category heading, and the
following columns are more levels of detail. So the first column has cells
that are merged across many rows, in some cases enough that the page break is
in the middle of the merge.

when a page break occurs, the merged cells content isn't repeated, so it
looks like it's blank on a new page. Is there any way to cause the cells
value to be repeated after a page break?

Unfortunately, no. Thus far, Word has no built-in facility to repeat column
entries, nor even add "cont". You could, though, anchor a text box to text
in, say, the next column and position the text box in the first column.
