Rules and Outlook 2003
When Outlook 2003 is using an Exchange Server, the maximum size for the
rules file is 32k, which is pretty small if you have a lot of email and what a large group filtered by name. However, it seems when you use Outlook for simply POP mail, there is a much larger limit on how big the rules file can be. (I haven't hit the limit yet, but my rules file is way larger than 32k. How can I make Outlook 2003 think I am using POP when I am downloading from an Exchange Server? I tried making the pst file on my local drive, having the mail delivered there and then only run the rules after the mail was delivered and it still tries to upload the rules to the Exchange Server. I even tried creating all the rules off line until the file was well over 32k. The rules work fine until the first time I connect to the Exchange Server, and then it automatically turns off all the rules over 32k. Clearly it is possible to have both more than 32k of rules and download messages, why can't I have them at the same time. I understand that I cannot have server rules more than 32k and the rules won't work when I am not connected, but I don't care. I simply want to get all the rules on my local machine and then have them sorted. I thought that was the purpose of client-only rules, but it is not. I cannot have more than 32k of rules of any kind and hook to an Exchange Server. Isn't it possible to fool an Exchange Server so the rules don't upload? ---Mike |

I'm not sure this is accurate, but I'm not familiar enough with Exchange to say. How can I make Outlook 2003 think I am using POP when I am downloading from an Exchange Server? If your Exchange admins allow it, you can connect to the Exchange server via POP protocols. -- Brian Tillman |
