Maybe your Word software is a free trial version, and the free
trial period has expired?

No...It is not a trial version. It was working up until about 4 weeks ago.
Then it has just been gray'd out. Do not know why. and can not get it back.
(save works...but i can not re-name documents) and this happens even on
brand new documents.

What version of Word might this be? Are any other commands
gray'd out?

Could be a damaged Word 2003 data key in the Windows registry.
Close Word 2003, start regedit, and rename the
"\\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11. 0\Word\Data"
key. Word will automatically create a new data key when you
restart it.

If that doesn't fix the problem, then try working through the
troubleshooting steps at
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...artingWord.htm .
