Default MS 2003: Table at 100% does not resize properly

I've never had this happen before.

A table with Table PropertiesPreferred width... set to 100% in a single
column (7") page does not reset to 100% of the column width when the page
format is changed to two columns (2" and 5").

Instead the table displays as slightly more than half of the 5" column
(approximately 3"), although Table PropertiesPreferred width... still says
100%.

Any ideas?
