Cannoy launch OE, cannot import dbx into Outlook either
"Jim Pickering" wrote: "FatherJohn" wrote in message ... If you extracted the files, in what format are they? And where are they stored? The extracted files are eml and are located on my desktop in a New Folder. I can neither import them or the dbx files into Outlook nor can I open Outlook Express. I still get the aforementioned errors. Extacted EML files can be dragged/dropped into a local mail folder in Outlook Express. Just drag/drop them into the Preview Pane of the desired folder. font color=blue If I could open OE, that would help, but I cannot open OE at al./font Once you completed the extraction, did you then *move* all of the corrupted DBX files that were in your message store folder to another location on your hard drive? Yes, I moved them all from their previous storage location (My Documents/email/) to a new folder called mail on my desktop. I dragged everything - dbx files, folders and all from the previous location to the new folder on my desktop. I'd suggest you then use Windows Explorer to navigate to that old folder and make sure it is empty. Sometimes a drag/drop can result in a copy operation, rather than a complete move and if the corrupted DBX files are still there in the store folder, you will get the error message. font color=blueI did that. deleted all vestiges of the old folder and created an empty one in its place with the same name. The backed up files I cut and pasted in a new folder at my c:root directory./font Where GUID above is the key for each identity. If unsure, double click each GUID to check the username involved, then expand the key further for that particular user to \Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0 (clicking on the 5.0 to expand it) and look at the value in the "StoreRoot" key in the right hand pane. This method seemed to indicate that the identitiy was located under\Microsoft\Outlook Express\ but there are no dbx files and no subfolders there. I am confused by that. All it is intended to indicate is the folder where it looks for the DBX files. It will not show any DBX files. If you are still having a problem, I would suggest creating a folder and call it MailStore and create it on your root drive (i.e., C:\ at the root and not in some subfolder) and after creating that empty folder, amend the registry to show that location (C:\MailStore). That should allow Outlook Express to open with a new and empty set of default folders (Inbox, Sent Items, Drafts, etc.). Good luck. font color=blue I did this. Created the empty folder and pointed the Man Identity in the Registry to that directory as you suggested. Nothing has changed. All the errors remain exactly as they were. I do not have the means to back up all my data and re-nstalling WinXP but that seems to all left that I can think of. I am baffled. Rebooting again after reinstalling OE for the fifth time..../font -- Jim Pickering, MVP/Windows Mail applications Please reply ONLY to newsgroup. |

Cannoy launch OE, cannot import dbx into Outlook either
FYI - to all, thank you.
I backed up all my data, uninstalled IE 7.0, and then did a reinstall of Windows XP. I lost virtually nothing and OE now works. I suspect strongly that IE 7.0 is the problem. I have switched to Mozilla Firefox and won't use internet explorer any more. It has always been a problem here and there, but this was the last straw. Thanks again for the help. |
