Is it possible to sort a table of contents by entry rather than by page
number?

When you do this, it's effectively an index rather than a TOC.

Thanks Suzanne, I was afraid you would say that.

With TOCs, they can be built using styles to identify the material to be
used. With INDEXes, you need to add a tag with the appropriate reference to
the text to be included.

So it looks like I need to change the lists I have that use TOCs to match
the other tables that actual loop through the document looking for a specifc
style and then adding the information to the table. The extra benefit to the
switch is the tables and lists would look the same, like the other tables I
can add extra information (chapter heading) and then allow the user to sort
the information on any if the columns.

What you *can* do, of course, is create a TOC, unlink it, and then sort
alphabetically. But you could do this only when editing is complete.

Unfortunately this a template to help users create specific documents. The
tables are used to summarize key items with hyperlinks to take you back to
the source of the reference. So, since it is under user control, it has to
be simple. Also, the lists and the tables contain hyperlinks, but only the
hyperlinks in the table are blue. Since the lists are a variation of TOCs,
the hyperlinks are not coloured blue.
