Default Not the typical date formatting issue

I have a mail merge set up to merge a date field from excel. For a while it
was working perfectly, date was coming in the right format, as a date. Now,
for some unknown reason it is coming over as a date number code and I can't
figure out how to fix it. I've changed the excel cell format to date so it
appears as a date in excel but still comes over as a date code. Help please!
Going out of my mind.
