Default "Notebook Layout View" Compatibility

Is there compatibility issues between the Notebook Layout View in Office Mac
2004, and Office 2003 for Windows? I have run the compatibilty checker in
Office Mac, and it does not report any problems, but when I open a document
created in Notebook Layout View (on Office Mac) in Office Windows, it only
shows the information from the first tab. If I save the document on Windows,
when I open it on Mac, all the information from the other tabs is gone. I
can't seem to find any info on this problem anywhere.

Default "Notebook Layout View" Compatibility

Hi,

If I understood properly, your issue is: the document created in Notebook
Layout view in Word 2004 for Mac does not display properly in Word 2003.
Additionally, the Word 2003 document also displays improperly in Word 2004
for Mac.

Is that correct?

Based on your description, I have also done some tests, but failed to
reproduce the same issue. I have created a new document in Word 2004 for
Mac, typed some characters, hit the Tab key for several times, and opened
it in Word 2003. Everything displays just fine.

From the test results, I don't think there has some compatibility issues
between Office 2004 for Mac and Office 2003. Would you please try the
suggestions below to narrow down this issue?

* Suggestion 1: keep both products updated
==========================
It is important that you update Microsoft products regularly. The more
updated, he fewer problems.

To update Office 2003, follow this link:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/do...incatalog.aspx

To update Office 2004 for Mac, follow this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx

* Suggestion 2: Recreate Word 2004 Preferences
===========================
Corrupt Office 2004 preferences can cause this problem. Let's follow the
steps below to recreate the settings:

1. Quit all Office 2004 applications.
2. Drag the file "Normal" from the folder "[hard drive]: users: [user
name]: Documents: Microsoft User Data" to your desktop.
3. Drag any folders related to Word, PowerPoint in the folder "[hard
drive]: Applications: Microsoft Office 2004: Office: Startup" to your
desktop if there is any.
4. Drag the "Microsoft" folder from the folder "[hard drive]: users: [user
name]: Library: Preferences" to the desktop.
5. Restart Word 2004 applications and switch to Notebook Layout View to
create a new document.
6. Open the document in Word 2003 to see if this problem is gone.

* Suggestion 3: Start Word 2003 with /a switch
==========================
The /a switch is a troubleshooting tool that is used to determine where a
problem may exist when you are working with Windows Word. To start Word
using /a switch, please follow the steps below:

1. Click StartRun.
2. Type "winword /a" (without the quotation marks) and press Enter.
3. After Word starts, create a document with some tabs and open it in Word
2004 for Mac.

If it works fine with Word 2003 /a switch, please consider the following
methods to fix this issue:

# 1 Do Not Run Auto Macros
# 2 Empty the Startup Folder
# 3 Check for COM Add-Ins
# 4 Rename the Global Template
# 5 Rename the Data Key and Options Key in the Windows Registry

The detailed steps can be obtained at the following KB article:

259413 How to troubleshoot problems that may occur when you start or work
in Word 2000, in Word 2002, and in Word 2003
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;EN-US;259413

If all fail, then collect the following information for me:

* Information Collection
=================
1. Take some screenshots on the exact scenario on both Windows and OS X,
and send them to me.
** To take a screenshot in Windows
---------------------
a. When the document is opened in Word 2003, press PrScrn key on your
keyboard.
b. Type "mspaint" (without the quotation marks) in StartRun box and click
OK.
c. Click EditPaste to paste the screenshot.
d. Save it as JPEG file type and send it as Email attachment.
---------------------
** To take a screenshot in Mac OS X
---------------------
a. When the document is opened in Word 2004 for Mac, press Command + Shift
+ 3, and the screen picture are then saved on your desktop with the
filename Picture 1, Picture 2, etc. Alternatively, you can press
Command+Shift+4, and the mouse cursor will become a cross and you can drag
the mouse to include a rectangular range. The range will be saved as a
picture file (in PDF format) on the desktop.
b. Open the latest picture to make sure it is the one you just created and
send it to me.
---------------------
2. Send me two sample files, one is created in Word for Windows, and the
other is created in Word for Mac.

You can send all the required files directly to this newsgroup or you can
send them to me at

Anything unclear, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Default "Notebook Layout View" Compatibility

Thanks for the detailed troubleshooting steps - I will go through them.

The problem is exactly as I described in the first posting. In Notebook
Layout view on the Mac, you can create multiple tabs. If I have more than
one tab with text on it, then I save the document and open it on Word 2003
for Windows, any text that was not on the first tab is gone. If I then edit
the document on Windows and re-open it on the Mac, the text from the other
tabs is missing there, too.

It is not that the document does not display properly, it is that any text
on tabs other than the first one does not carry over when editing the
document on the Windows version.

What is the normal functionality? How is text from multiple tabs usually
presented when editing the document in Windows? And should the text on
multiple tabs be preserved when editing the document in Windows, then opening
it again on a Mac?

Default "Notebook Layout View" Compatibility

Just to clarify - when I am talking about "tabs", I am talking about the
different "tabs" (as in page divider "tabs" in a binder) that are displayed
in the Notebook Layout View on the Mac, NOT the "tab" key on the keyboard.
Sorry, I don't normally use Mac, and the Notebook Layout View is not a
feature that exists in the Windows version. I don't know what the correct
Microsoft terminology is for these tabs / pages / whatever.

Default "Notebook Layout View" Compatibility

Hi Glen,

Word:mac 2004's 'Notebook layout view' is unique to the Mac version. It's sort of similar to Office for Windows OneNote product,
but not quite g. The developers for it talk about it in more detail here and in the article linked to near the top of that
article.

You may want to follow up in the Word:mac discussion group on this one using the link below on being able to move your documents to
Winword (which doesn't have a tabbed document 'view' as a direct equivalent.

Default "Notebook Layout View" Compatibility

Hi,

Sorry for misunderstood your concerns about tabs. Actually the tabs mean
Section 1, Section 2, etc. Is that right?

Based on this, I have done some further tests, and found although Word 2003
does not provide this "Notebook Layout" view mode, the contents on Section
2 and Section 3 can be displayed properly. They are shown on the consequent
pages. Each page starts with a header such as a date or Author name.

Please check the whole document in Word 2003 to see if there have some
pages that you missed in your first glance.

If you still cannot find the contents on the other sections, please try my
suggestions in my first reply and see the results.
