Default O.E. Address Book Groups

My O.E. Address Book puts names in alphabetical order by LAST name, but when
I have a group WITHIN the address book, it puts them alphabetically by first
name. Is there any way to change that?

Hi Joy,

When viewing the group in the address book use the View menu to Sort By last
name.

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the reply. I do have that (Sort by Last Name) selected for the
personal names in my address book. But any Group lists itself by the group
name and when I open it, the names in the group window stay by first name.
Unless there's another way to view the group other than double clicking on
it?

Hi Joy,

I'll need to inquire further into this setting. The view in my address book
is the same for all folders. A quick way to change the sort order is to
click the Name column header.

Hi Tim,

Maybe so you'll know what I'm talking about, you could try creating a
"sample" group. Here's how I created the group: In Address book, I clicked
on New and chose New Group. In the window that opened I gave the group a
name, and then typed each name down below with their e-mail address.
Clicking Add puts each name in the group members window. Unless I list the
last name first, it alphabetizes them by first name. If I do Doe, Jane,
then of course they are by last name. But if I type Jane Doe, it lists by
Jane first. Once I'm finished typing all the names for that group, and
click OK, they are listed in my regular Address Book under the group name.
Double clicking on that group name only opens the window that I've just
finished filling out. Hope I'm explaining this correctly/clearly.

Maybe I don't understand how to use New Folder rather than New Group.

Hi Joy,

I now understand more about the problem. The group folders I've previously
put together had entries selected from the Main Contacts folder. I found
that typing the entries in the group properties sheet results in the entry
not showing in the group (folder) pane. It looks like a full address book
entry is not created.

If you could enter the contacts in the Main Contacts folder, and then select
them for the group it would then be possible to sort by last name (in the
contacts pane for the group), not the group properties sheet. To make this
simpler the entries in the Main Contacts folder could temporarily be moved
to another location. This would make it easier to select only the group
entries.

An export to a comma-separated values (.csv) file could be done to back-up
the Main Contacts entries. After the group entries are completed import the
Main Contacts entries.

It is quite possible that someone will be able to offer another, better
solution.

Thanks, Tim. For now, as I had mentioned, I had typed the Group names with
last name first, as in Doe, Jane. But I'll save this page you sent for
future information. The reason I wanted the Group names alphabetically is
if I want to add new names, I want to make sure it's not a duplication.

Office, but not Outlook. Well, maybe it is installed as I supposedly got
all of Office in the computer when I bought it new last May. I don't use
Outlook, though, I use O.E. . . . . Just looked at Start-Programs, and I do
apparently have Outlook installed.

Do you have this Registry key?...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER
\Software
\Microsoft
\WAB
\WAB4

If not, STOP; If so, is there a DWORD named UseOutlook and is its value set
to 1 (one)?

If not, STOP; If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with
Outlook, even if you don't use it (can happen with the install of Office).
Change the value to 0 (zero), Address Book should be available to you and
all should be well. (If that DWORD is not present, don't create it, and
don't alter any other DWORD values.)

Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing was
enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book when sharing is
disabled.
