Default How do I adjust the line spacing to stay single space?

I am having difficulty getting any document to be single spaced. No matter
what It always comes out 1.5 or double spaced. I am new at all this and it is
very annoying.
Thanks for your help.

Which version of Word?

You can modify the Normal style to suit your needs (that's the only way to
"globally" change the line spacing in Word 97-2003). In Word 2007, you can
choose to change the document defaults.
