Mail merge with Works database(.wdb) putting junk character in merge fields

Win XP Home
Word 2000
Works 2000

While trying to mail merege with a .wdb works database, in
the place of Merge feilds its putting junk characters.
However its working fine with MS Access nad Excel....

Please help. Urgent
