Default Hyperlink on Backgound sheet does not work

Hello everyone!

Visio 2002: I added some hyper links to shapes on my background sheet.
Problem: The hyper links do not work on foreground sheets using that
background sheet (full screen mode F5). I can see the shapes but I can not
click them.

Is it possible to use hyperlinks on background sheets?

Thank you!
Andreas

Doesn't look like it. Connection points on background pages don't work
either even though they are visible.

Slight correction: You can Snap to Connection points which are on a
background page, but you cannot Glue to them. The same goes for Snapping
to other options (Guides, Intersections, etc) of objects which are on the
background page.

Objects that are not physically on the drawing page will not export, as the
export function is creating a list of objects on the actual page, not those
which are visible 'through' the page.

Thank you for your answer.

But in my opinion is it a missing functionality, that hyperlinks on
background sheets are not working (Visio 2002). Is this also the matter in
all later Visio versions?

Hello Al,

thank you for your answer. In my opinion it is a missing functionality. Is
there any workaround - my be using VBA?

That's correct - all versions of Visio will behave the same way, and as far
as I know, has always been true. I should add that we do export the links
when saving to HTML format, so that you can save in that way to view in a
browser with the functionality you are looking for.

In Visio, however, the behavior in all versions is that only links
contained in the current page are functional in Full Screen mode, as well
as in normal editing view. Notice that in normal view, the pointer does
not change to indicate links when mousing over the background page objects
as well.

I'm curious how you are using Visio and the full screen view mode, and how
this behavior impacts you. I can log a 'wish' for modifying the behavior
in a future version, but can't guarantee that this would become available,
of course.

Thank you for the additional information.

I am using Visio to develop the GUI for a webbased application. The
different dialogues are on different sheets. My intention was to put all
framework (header, menu) on a background sheet. That works well except the
menu is not clickable.

Visio is an ideal tool for designing the GUI and to show screenflow. There
are no developer skills necessary and a good result can be achieved quickly.
But without the "requestet" feature it is very laborious to change the menu
(links) on 50 sheets.

Can you see my point?

Andreas

Thanks for the detailed scenario, it does help to explain what you are
doing. We don't have a way to achieve this within Visio, but you could
export to another format that may help.

As I noted before, the Save As Web Page (HTML) output works as you are
describing. It's also possible that PDF and/or XPS format would perform
that way. But for Visio drawings in Visio (and in the Viewer), it will not
work that way.

I will log the scenario and your request, and just want to remind you that
I can't guarantee if this behavior will change in any future version.

A way around this would be to create a page with all your framework
shapes and put them on a layer. Now make all the shapes on that layer
can be protected (select all the shapes, then menu Format -
Protection) and menu Format - Behavoir and turn off the Selection
highlighting.
Save that as a template. Now all the shapes are safe and the
hyperlinks on those shapes still wrok.
