Default unable to compact all folders in OE

The folders, dbsx is about 713 kb in size. I don't have a search.dbx at all.

Note the pattern: Search*.dbx It actually matches numbered files
(which you only see by looking in your OE6 Message Store) such as
Search Folder (999).dbx I suppose you really wouldn't have any
if you never use the Find Message... Edit command.
(More easily used by pressing Ctrl-Shift-F.)

The only news account I have is the msnews.microsoft.com news account.

Well, if you don't find any other way of getting Folders.dbx compacted
removing that account and re-adding it would at least preserve your local
folder structure. Deleting Folders.dbx would cause a new one to be created
but you would lose some customization information that you would have to
reconstruct. Tom Koch's site has some more details about that final option.

Good luck

Robert

Ok. I tried deleating the folders.dbx file and tried compacting again but
with the same results. This is with a new identity I made about a week ago.
I really don't want to compact all 101 or so folders by hand every time. I
tried removing the inbox, outbox, sent and drafts dbx files to see if they
were the culpret but no joy.

Default unable to compact all folders in OE

Hello Marie,

Perhaps we can try to trouble shoot the problem.

For this test I do not want you to use any of your existing identities or
folders.

Create a new Identitiy.

Open this new Identity.

On the menu bar choose File, then on it's menu select Folders, on it's
expanding menu choose Compact All Folders.

Did the compact complete without problems?

Yes it did.

Great.

Now lets try importing just a few folders at a time with compacting after
each import.

What we are looking for is to have the compacting fail. When it fails this
should give us a indication where to look for the problem.

In your new identity on the File menu select Import, on it's expanding menu
choose Messages.

This will produce the Outlook Express Import dialog wizard window. In this
window select Microsoft Outlook Express 6, then click Next. In this window
choose the identity that has been causing the problem, click OK. This window
displays the location, click Next. This window is where individual folders
can be selected. Hold down the Ctrl key then click each of the first five
folders listed, this should show them highlighted, click Next. This window
should indicate import was successful, click Finish.

Now try compacting all folders.

Did the compact complete without problems?

If yes, import the next five folders, compacting after each import, until
there is a failure.

The choice is yours, remember you are importing to find a problem.

I suggested five folders, you can import more or less folders, the object is
to have the failure occur then isolate it to which of those last imported
folders is causing the problem. I picked five folders at a time, you can
choose a different number if you want.
