Default excel '97 freezing up on xp

Is Excel '97 supposed to work with Windows XP. Ever since I've had my new
computer with XP, my excel '97 is very buggy. Almost every time I make up
even the simplest of spread sheets, it will print once or twice and then
suddenly it will cause the computer to hang and freeze when I try to print.
And of course it won't print. What is going on?

Excel 97 works just fine with XP, sounds like a printer driver problem

I am using 97 and 2000 - sometimes both at once - in XP.

Have a look at printer setup and set to print via a file ("fast
printing") rather than direct to printer (otherwise Excel will wait
until all data is received by your printer).... ?
