If it is a unicode .pst file, you would have no need of the .pst crop tool.
In task manager, how many instances of outlook.exe are running? If you shut
them all down, can you then open Outlook?

Your PST file is oversized. Microsoft Outlook 2002 and earlier
versions limit the size of Personal Folders (PST) file to 2GB.
Whenever the PST file reaches or exceeds that limit, you will not be
able to open or load it any more, or you cannot add any new data to
it. This is called oversized PST file problem. More detailed
information can be found at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/problems/2gb-pst.htm

You can use Advanced Outlook Repair to solve the problem, by either
converting it into Outlook 2003 format ( http://www.datanumen.com/aor/problem...rt-2gb-pst.htm
), or splitting it into smaller pieces ( http://www.datanumen.com/aor/problems/split-2gb-pst.htm
)

http://www.datanumen.com/aor/ contains the detailed information about
Advanced Outlook Repair.

And you can also download a free demo version at http://www.datanumen.com/aor/aor.exe

9 GB size for an Outlook 2003 PST file is very large though not above
the file size limitation can arise performance issue and this is problem
faced by you. If the problem is not sorted out soon, it may make the PST
file corrupted and thus its data inaccessible. You need nothing but a
'split PST' (http://www.splitpstfile.com) tool to sort the issue, it
efficiently divides them into smaller sizes in a way that it can work
independently. This not only solves the problem but also avoid
corruption to a considerable extent.
