Why doesn't Word 2007 accept print default settings

I use Word 2007 on Vista Ultimate with an HP Deskjet 6980 printer. Word does
not accept the printing preferences I set in the printers dialog of the
Control Panel, nor does it accept the choice of paper tray I set in Word
options, advanced tab. Is there a fix for this?
