Default Headers & Footers

I'm setting H&F in a long document. I have no problem with the odd/even
numbering. However, I want the chapter name to change in the header on each
chapter. I've read all the helps and cannot find my error. I think it's in
the section breaks but can't figure out where I'm going wrong. It seems to
work for a few chapters then it either reverts to the previous one or when I
set the last chapter -- the headers all change to that chapter name. I've
been workng on this all week with no luck.

Would so much appreciate any help!!

A styleref field can do what you want. See

Thank you for your response Pam, I checked the link and not being familiar
with styleref field - I did as it suggested and checked help for styleref
field. Word 7 says it can't find any such thing.

For more information about the STYLEREF field, click the Index tab in
Microsoft Word 7.0 Help, type the following text
STYLEREF

When you can't find something in Help in Word 2007, the best resource is
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...649261033.aspx, which provides
access to the generally helpful Word 2003 Help file. But also see
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/StyleRef.htm

One would think that help topics still relevant for Word 2007 (after some
minor changes) could easily be added to Word 2007 help, but apparently that
is a difficult task. sigh

Often Word 2007 Help does point to one of these online topics, but there are
no links to "advanced" topics, including most fields.

I may have pinpointed the problem but don't know how to fix it. In the H/F
everything goes along fine. Maybe 3 chapters, maybe 5 chapter but then when
I go to the next section, click to edit the header, click in the header ----
instead of the Link to Connect box lighting up - it stays grayed out. If I
click it it asks if I want to connect to the previous chapter and when I say
no, I either have to leave that chapter with the previous name - or if I
change the name, all the previous chapters change also. It almost seems like
the Link to Connect button loses it's reference - and doesn't light up when
it should.

Why would it not stay the same from chapter to chapter -- or am I doing
something wrong? I've watched the videos, downloaded the text files from a
number of places -- they all say the same. It should work -- but that danged
Link to Connect button is messing me up. I'm having so much trouble getting
this done I'm not sure I want to switch to a new process, like the styleref,
even if I knew how to do it. There are only 6 chapters, but I can't get past
4.

Default Headers & Footers

You can have up to three headers (and three footers) in each section, which is the case if you have enabled both "Different first page" and "Different odd and even" in the Page Setup dialog box. Each of the headers (footers) must be separately unlinked from its "neighbor" in the preceding section.

Default Headers & Footers

The fact that it is dimmed just means that it is not active; that is, the
header/footer in question is NOT linked to the previous one. If you click on
it, you are turning it from OFF to ON, which is why you get the question
about whether or not you want to link to the previous section. If you want
different text in that header/footer, then you do NOT want to link them; you
can change the text in that header without affecting the previous one.

As Stefan points out, however, the link is to the like-kind header/footer,
of which there can be up to three different kinds in a given section.
Perhaps the information at
http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/HeaderFooter.htm will be helpful.
