Default installation or registry problem

I have been using Outlook Express for many years. Just installed Outlook two
days ago. Outlook was working fine for one day (received my emails, input
appointments on my calendar, etc.). But, I bounced between both Outlook
Express and Outlook a few times the next day. I indicated that Outlook would
be my default email but now it doesn't work at all. I get a message that
"the operation failed due to an installation or registry problem. Restart
Outlook and try again. If problem persists, reinstall." Well, I've done
this many times and it still doesn't work. When I go into the Tools menu, I
can't click on Email Accounts -- I get the same messge.
