Default Strange line break character in Powerpoint 2008 for MAc

I'm designing a master set of templates in powerpoint 2008 for Mac.
I'm using master layout text placeholders to designate text to certain
areas, but after every line I've written, a strange character appears,
even though I haven't typed it in, nor am I allowed to remove it
either.

If I've made a line break, the character appears in the presentations
that are using the template as well. If I haven't made a line break in
the template, it won't appear in the presentation, but still appear in
the layout design mode using the template.

Can you help me get rid of this strange character? I haven't been
switching between office versions or office and open office or
anything of that kind.

Are these paragraph symbols? It sounds like you have Show Paragraphs
turned on, BUT this isn't an option in PowerPoint. Can you describe the
weird symbols? Was the text copied and pasted from somewhere (perhaps, a
Windows computer). You might also try asking your question in the Mac
PowerPoint forum as this form is inhabited by Windows people (although
some of us go both ways).
