Default Ruler measurement unit

I just upgraded to Word 2003. My ruler is using
centimeters, and I think so is the Format, paragraph
command, which shows measurement unit "ch". (What is
a "ch"?) In tools, options, general, my measurement unit
is shown as inches. How can I get the unit to be inches
universally? Page setup shows inches. Thanks.
