Default Different spacing for manual/automatic linebreaks?

Hello.

For a heading I'd like to set a different (larger) spacing between 2 lines
after a manuel linebreak (shift+enter) than after an automatic linebreak.
Usually you'd use paragraphs here I'd say, but since it's a heading this is
no option here, because that would screw up the new numbering (the headings
are a multilevel list).

Actually it should look like this, with some increased space between
"Chapter X" and "Introduction blah blah blah ....".

Chapter X [manual linebreak here]
Introduction blah blah blah .... [if neccessary automatic linebreaks here]

Any ideas on how to solve this issue?

Kind regards, Chris

Why not insert a parag break after your chapter heading, and format the
Introduction blah..blah paragraph with a non-numbered, non-heading style
that has the appropriate space before. That should maintain your multi-level
numbering when you insert the next numbered heading style downstream in the
document.

Unless I understood something wrong this would remove the "Introduction blah
blah blah..." from the automatic Table of Contents, no?

Yes, you are right. You didn't specify that the parags under the headings
were to be in the TOC. But how about this: Insert the line break after the
chapter heading, then a character string that is formatted white, in a small
font size (e.g. 4 or 8 pts), then another line break, then the
Intro...blah...blah...
Problem is, that works for the headings in the text, but the spacing gets
canceled in the TOC. You have to go through each chapter entry in the TOC,
and manually insert the line breaks, font size and color for the spacer
text. Perhaps VBA might automate this, but I don't have the time to try it.
Incidentally, when using marker text that needs to be found by a macro but
not displayed (like the small white text between chapter heading and intro),
I use the string qq, because that does not appear in any known language.

Near the bottom of MVP Suzanne Barnhill's tips about TOCs is a section that
I think deals with what you want, a two line heading:

Default Different spacing for manual/automatic linebreaks?

Today I finally had some time to have a look at the tutorial. The result in
MS Word 2007 is exactly what I was looking for. At this point I'd like to
thank you first for this very helpful link!

Though there's one remaining issue with the solution from the tutorial: if I
create a pdf out of the Word document (with PDFMaker from Adobe), and set to
add a bookmark for every heading, then I'll not get any chapter numbers for
such 2 line headings. I have yet to find a workaround for this problem.
Any additional ideas on this part would be more than welcome.

Kind regards, Chris.

P.S.: the Microsoft version of the PDF generator doesn't seem to add any
numberings to the PDF at all...

You are welcome. Sorry, can't think of a workaround for the pdf problem
either.
