Default Fax not releasing after auto-receive

"It does not appear to relase the line" means what?

Hello,

My Agere internal fax-modem will auto-receive a fax correctly
(currently set to answer after 2 rings). However, after doing so, it
does not appear to release the line. If I then go to use internet
explorer, the dialup window appears, and IE *does* then release the
line before dialing, so after I close IE and disconnect from the
internet, I can send/receive faxes again.

I'm using XP Home Edition with the built-in fax driver. Faxing is from
MS Word (Office XP edition).

Thank you.
