Document Map Confused

.....or (more probably) me (1st time using the function).
(Wd2k on Win2kPro.)

The problem is caused (*I think*) because of what I'm doing, which is;

I have set up three levels of Heading styles plus on of my own design
(call it "sub").
On the Head 2 & 3 I have the "Following Para.." set to "sub".
The purpose of this is to repeat the Head 2 & 3 in the "sub" with the
"sub" appearing on the right side of the page on the same line as the
heading in a different font. I set a right indent in the Heading equal
to the left indent of the sub.
A tab is inserted after the heading text and, after enter, the Head is
copied to the sub line.
Using Shauna Kelly's (excellent) article about hiding the paragraph mark
to allow a mixed format on one line and it works perfectly (select the
para mark of the Heading and mark it as hidden, then toggle the
show/hide and the head and sub appear on the one line).

Now the problem;

When I use the Map function and tell it to display the heading 1 items
it insists on displaying both the Head 1 & the sub break (on the head 2
line). Selecting the sub item causes the cursor to be positioned on the
1st character of the sub. If I expand the Head 1 entry I get the actual
Head 2 item and, selecting it, the cursor appears at the beginning of
the Head 2 text.
i.e. when the head 1 item is expanded it correctly shows the actual Head
2 item but the next expandable item is the sub item (the duplicate of
head 2).

What I expected;
When I tell it to display the Heading 1 level I expected ONLY the
headings at that level to display. It appears as though my defined style
(sub) is confusing the function. It appears as though Word is thinking
that my sub is a Heading 1 style(?).

Boy, I'm looking at this epistle and realized that it's far too long and
complex!
I can live with it if it's my "dipsy doodling" that's causing the
problem - just concerned that I don't understand the Map function.
