Default leader and tabs in TOC

I would like to know how to set the leader so that it will
be consistent with the entire TOC. Right now, if a word is
less than 7 letters (for example, "INDEX"), the leader
does not extend from the word to the the page numbers. I
have to add a tab to get it to do that. When I update the
table, I have to add the tab again.

I have been playing with indents, tab stops and everything
else I can find in the style format dialogs, but
everything I do seems to make it worse. I can't find
anything in the Help files that addresses this, but I am
not sure what I don't understand, so I don't know how to
search for what I am trying to do. Can you help me?

My tab stops are currently set at 1.75 and 5.75, and the
page margins a L=1.5" R=1" T=1.2" B=1.2"

I am using WORD 2003 on an XP machine.
Thanks very much!
Terry

I'd take a look into Suzanne Barnhill's Article:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TOCSwitches.htm

Also, make sure that the lines in question don't have direct-formatting
in them, something that can happen once in a while. Look up the /w
switch for TOC and also:

Whenever I update my Table of Contents it acquires unwanted tabs, and I
have to press Ctrl+Q to get rid of them (by Dave Rado)
